Materials Needed

  • IKEA Malm drawers
  • White primer & paint (optional) – We used Lick BLACK02
  • Wood timber – We used (L)2.4m (W)38mm (T)15mm packs from B&Q
  • Wood glue – We used EverBuild 5 Minute Polyurethane Wood Glue Gel from Tool Station
  • Spring clamps
  • Fine sandpaper
  • IKEA Malm glass top (optional) – for added protection

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Snag an IKEA Malm drawer set.
  2. Lightly sand down all surfaces to prep for painting.
  3. Apply a coat of white primer to the drawer surfaces.
  4. Paint with your desired color (we recommend a couple of coats for the best result).
  5. Measure the length of the drawer fronts and cut the timber to the same length.
  6. Lightly sand the cut timber edges.
  7. Lay the timber pieces on one drawer front, spacing them evenly. We used cardboard cutouts to align the gaps between the pieces.
  8. Apply a thin line of wood glue down the center of each timber piece. Be cautious not to use too much glue, as it may seep out the edges while drying.
  9. Starting at one end of the drawer, place the timber flush to the edge and clamp it down for 10 minutes. Repeat this process on the opposite end of the drawer.
  10. Attach the remaining center timber pieces using the same method. Place another piece of timber diagonally across, clamping the edges and placing a heavy object in the center to help weigh down the timber.
  11. Complete these steps for all drawer fronts.
  12. Once finished, place the IKEA Malm glass top on the drawers for added protection, and voila! You’ve successfully completed the Affordable & Stylish: IKEA Malm Drawer Hack.

Helpful Tips

Be mindful of the wood glue’s consistency during the gluing process. If too much is applied, it can seep out the edges as it dries and expands. If this occurs, quickly wipe away the excess glue while it’s still wet for an easy fix. With a little effort and creativity, you can transform an ordinary set of drawers into a stylish and functional piece of furniture without breaking the bank. Happy hacking!
