Step 1: Prepare the Cutout Drawers

IKEA Hemmnes Hack - Prepare the Cutout Drawers

Draw a rectangle onto the front of each drawer leaving at least a 4cm edge and cut it out with a jigsaw. For the best result, try to follow the lines exactly but don’t worry too much as you can fill any imperfections with some wood filler in the next step.

Drill holes for the new handles into the remaining part of the drawer front.

Step 2: Attach the Moulding

IKEA Hemmnes Hack - Prepare for Painting

Sand the cut edges of the drawer to ensure they are as smooth as possible. Then cut the moulding strips at a 45° angle with a fine saw (or a mitre saw) and glue them to the inner edge of the drawer cut out. Tape everything in place while the wood glue dries.

Let it dry completely and then fill any gaps with wood filler before sanding everything so it’s completely smooth.

Step 3: Prepare for Painting

When painting particle board, it’s important to sand the surface and use the correct primer so that the paint will adhere to the smooth surface.

Sand the whole Hemnes dresser with 120-grit sandpaper. Then remove all traces of dust – a tack cloth is perfect for this – and add a coat of adhesion-promoting primer. It’s vital to use the correct primer so that it sticks to the smooth surface.

When the primer has dried, lightly sand the surface with 320-grit sandpaper to remove any imperfections. Remove the dust and then paint the Hemnes dresser with your chosen paint color. Apply at least two coats of paint and always lightly sand between each coat for the best results.

Step 4: Attach the Cane Webbing

Cut the cane webbing into strips the size of your cut-out and staple it to the inside of the drawer with a staple gun. If you have any untidy edges, you can cover them with ribbon or some pretty tape.

Step 5: Assemble The Drawers & Add Handles

Follow IKEA’s instructions to assemble the drawers. Then, all that’s left to do is add some pretty new handles.

Bonus Tip: It will take a couple of weeks for the paint to fully cure and dry. Be careful not to scratch or chip the dresser while assembling the drawers. After a few weeks, the finish will be durable and long-lasting.
